Herlihy’s Bar

The story of Herlihy’s Bar, Farranfore, begins in early-August 1925, when Michael (the Boss) Collins of Currans bought the pub (for the second time and the second daughter!). The premises he bought was a long low thatched structure (the original Tollgate keeper’s house, hostelry and later post-office).

Kathleen Collins and her new husband Richard Herlihy, set-to as publicans. In 1930 misfortune befell them and their two young daughters Maura and Gabie, when the pub accidentally caught fire and burnt to the ground. Thus, the current building dates to the early-1930s. Despite such early adversity the couple ran the business until their deaths in 1957 (Richard) and 1963 (Kathleen).

From 1963 until 2006 their legacy was continued by their daughter Maura and her husband Pat Sullivan, who set up an overnight stop for Slattery’s Horse-drawn Caravans at Herlihy’s (1960’s-1990’s). In 2012 Herlihy’s celebrated its centenary, with their daughter Marie at the helm https://youtu.be/_IOC4o7SkQE. Marie “pulled her last pint” on Women’s Christmas, January 6, 2017 and the Curtain Came down on the End of an Era.
